Minh Thiem (Evelyn) Lieu - Winner

Evelyn’s commitment to community service has profoundly impacted Canley Vale High School and the broader community through her leadership and dedication to inclusivity. As a key member of the Student Representative Council, Evelyn has mentored peers, advocated for international students and championed multiculturalism, despite initial language barriers. Her contributions extend to fundraising for school events, volunteering with the Sydney Children's Hospitals Foundation and supporting Vietnamese newcomers through Student Life Care.  

Jack (Qixiu) Li - Highly Commended

Education institution: Epping Boys High School 

Home country: China 

Jack is a dedicated community member who has been recognised for his outstanding achievements in leadership, academics and sport. Jack entered into the school’s honour book for his significant contributions, including leading the Interact Program since 2022 and helping new students from overseas overcome language and cultural barriers. As a Student Mentor and key organiser of numerous school events, including the 2024 World’s Greatest Shave campaign, he has demonstrated exceptional commitment to raising awareness and funds for important causes. He has also dedicated more than 200 hours of service to NSW communities, including volunteering at the Rhodes Lunar New Year Festival and participating in major fundraising runs.  

Cristina Gabriela Tacuri Garcia - Winner

Education institution: Greenwich College 

Home country: Ecuador 

Since arriving in Sydney, Cristina has enriched her academic journey while fostering a vibrant community spirit. As a dedicated volunteer with SALSA NSW, Cristina teaches dance to the elderly and supports the organisation with many different tasks. Her performance at the STARS gala for the Cancer Council showcases her proactive approach to societal issues. Cristina’s initiative to offer free salsa sessions at Greenwich College promotes cultural exchange and inclusivity. Her second place Judges Choice award at the STARS competition further emphasises her impact and dedication.

FenZhi Wen - Highly Commended

Education institution: University of Newcastle 

Home country: China  

As a student in the Advanced English for Academic Purposes program at the University of Newcastle, FenZhi contributes to campus life through the Badminton Club and the Australia-China Youth Association. FenZhi recently won a badminton championship and helped more than 10 new members to improve their skills. FenZhi also plays a key role in cultural exchange events, fostering collaboration between Chinese and Australian students. Beyond academics, FenZhi has supported more than 15 of her peers to find housing and integrate into the local community, demonstrating exceptional leadership and commitment. 

Aradhana Grover - Winner

Education institution: University of Newcastle 

Home country: India 

As a third-year Bachelor of Nursing student at the University of Newcastle, Aradhana exemplifies outstanding leadership and community engagement. She provides compassionate care as an Assistant in Nursing for NSW Health and has dedicated 2 years to working in a nursing home. Her commitment extends to mentoring international students through the Australian Mateship Program and leading the Student Nurses and Midwives Society as a podcast convenor. Aradhana also contributes to health education and community wellbeing through volunteering, enhancing both the university experience and the broader NSW community. 

Aashish Neupane - Highly Commended

Education institution: Western Sydney University 

Home country: Nepal 

Aashish is the International Student Representative on the Western Sydney University Student Representative Council and President of the International Student Association. He has championed critical initiatives and advocates for the rights and wellbeing of international students. His leadership in organising forums, weekly catchups and Culture Corner events has fostered a strong sense of community among international students. Aashish's commitment extends to mental health, mentoring and cross-campus collaborations, significantly enhancing the student experience and advocating for meaningful change.

UNSW Water Safety Program - Winner

Organisation: UNSW Sydney 

The UNSW Water Safety Program has evolved from a pilot learn-to-swim initiative to a comprehensive water safety education model that includes a beach safety walk, beach safety program and a grant scheme. Since its inception in 2018, more than 1,700 students from over 50 countries have participated, with 1,100 joining the program from July 2023 to July 2024 alone. The program’s collaborative approach with local surf clubs and community organisations fosters inclusivity, enhances students' wellbeing and empowers them through crucial water safety skills and employment opportunities. 

Redfern Legal Centre’s International Student Legal Service (ISLS) - Winner

Organisation: Redfern Legal Centre 

Redfern Legal Centre’s ISLS is the only independent legal service dedicated to the 269,000 international students in NSW. Providing free, confidential legal advice and advocacy, ISLS addresses complex socio-legal issues, enhancing students’ health and education outcomes. ISLS’s culturally tailored resources and proactive legal education empower students to make informed decisions. Their impactful collaborations include the Play Safe Program and Study NSW Jobs Connect Internship. ISLS also advocate for systemic change, such as world-first visa protections, which help to showcase ISLS’s commitment to improving international students' well-being and legal safety in NSW. 

Wei (Martin) Cao  

Education provider: Knox Grammar School

Home country: China 

Since joining as an international Year 9 boarder in 2021, Martin has shown remarkable personal growth, becoming the Head Boarder Prefect and a School Executive Prefect in 2024. His leadership extends to excelling in the Cadets program and organising the inaugural Online NSW Head Boarder Conference. Martin has actively contributed to social justice events, excelled academically with national awards in economics and volunteered extensively.

Xiao Leang Yee

Linnette Wanjiku Ngure

Home country: Kenya 

As an international student at TAFE NSW Nepean-Kingswood, Linnette has excelled academically, earning her Cert IV, Diploma and Advanced Diploma in Hospitality Management. Her commitment extends beyond the classroom where she balanced work and family responsibilities while securing a role as Demi Chef at The Langham Hotel Sydney. Linnette actively engages in community service, participating in beach clean-ups and other volunteer activities. Her achievements reflect not only her personal dedication but also the supportive environment of TAFE NSW. 

Ziying Wu

Education institution: University of Newcastle 

Home country: China 

As an international student at the University of Newcastle English Language Centre, Ziying has quickly become a key supporter of her fellow international students. Despite the short duration of her course, Ziying has taken on an informal role as a peer supporter, aiding classmates with English and campus life from day one. Ziying’s dedication extends beyond the classroom, as seen in her proactive assistance in the community, such as helping a bus driver and guiding people in shopping centres. Ziying plans to join official university programs and local volunteer organisations to formalise and expand her community impact. 

FenZhi Wen

Home country: China

Maenadion’s (Mina) contributions have positively impacted Charles Sturt University and the broader NSW community. As a dedicated member of the Student Representative Committee, Mina has expertly managed social media to enhance student engagement. She has also played a crucial role in the International Student Mentoring Program, delivering orientation talks and supporting new students. Her involvement extends beyond the university with active roles in organising cultural events, promoting local businesses and participating in the Charles Sturt University Football Club.

Raghav Motani

Education institution: University of Technology Sydney  

Home country: India 

Raghav is an influential International Student Leadership Ambassador and University of Technology Sydney International Collective Officer, where he has helped to expand its membership from 30 to more than 700. He has been a strong advocate for international students and has worked diligently to address visa issues. Honoured with the Betty Makin Award for Young Community Champion, Raghav has organised key meetings (including with the Consulate General of India) and has partnered with various organisations to enhance student engagement. With more than 200 hours dedicated to Kookaburra Kids and training with Red Cross Emergency Services Australia, Raghav's relentless commitment to community support and leadership exemplifies his remarkable impact. 

Australian College of Applied Professions (ACAP) Clinics 

Organisation: ACAP Sydney  

The ACAP Clinics deliver free, statewide mental health and psychosocial care across NSW, offering individual casework, counselling and telehealth services to diverse populations. Central to their mission, the clinics provide hands-on training for more than 150 student clinicians annually, with international students making up approximately 70%. Through structured field education, students support vulnerable community members while gaining practical experience in bilingual and bicultural practice. The Clinics’ outreach includes community-based projects like the International Student Wellbeing Support Group, addressing issues such as isolation and stress. By integrating international students into the mental health workforce, ACAP Clinics enhance both student skills and community support.

University of Newcastle College of International Education (Kaplan) – 360 Degree Student Engagement Framework

Organisation: The University of Newcastle 

The University of Newcastle College of International Education launched Newcastle Experience Week in March 2023 which had a transformative impact on student engagement. This innovative initiative is designed to combat pandemic-induced isolation, foster community, connect students with job opportunities and integrate them into their new environment. It has evolved through 360-degree student feedback and collaboration, incorporating their ideas into successive events. The program's success led it to win the Kaplan Way Award at the end of 2023, highlighting its role in enhancing student success and community connections. Plans are now underway to expand its reach even further. 

City of Newcastle International Student Ambassador Program 

Organisation: The City of Newcastle 

The City of Newcastle International Student Ambassador Program is a collaboration between the City of Newcastle, the University of Newcastle, TAFE NSW and Study NSW. Its aim is to help foster inclusion and belonging for international students. Since January 2024 the program’s Ambassadors, including 2 current students and one alumnus, volunteer to enhance student experiences through community events, information sessions and employability initiatives. Their efforts raise the profile of international students, address critical accommodation issues and connect students with local job opportunities. By promoting Newcastle as a welcoming and supportive city, the program effectively integrates international students into the community, setting them up for success. 

City of Sydney’s Lord Mayor's Welcome for International Students 

Organisation: City of Sydney 

For 15 years, the Lord Mayor's Welcome for International Students has become a cornerstone for welcoming new students to Sydney. The yearly reception offers them a warm introduction to the city and its opportunities. In 2024, it focused on volunteering and community participation with more than 1,500 students registering from 85 nations. The event included a Welcome to Country, diverse entertainment and stalls from 24 support services that significantly enhanced a sense of belonging and connection with the city for new students. The program’s impact is reflected in high satisfaction rates and its role in fostering a supportive community for international students.
